Hip Flexor Stretch

Hip Flexor Stretch

Stretching your hip flexors can help with comfort during resistance training, an increased stride length in running/cycling and a load/force reduction on your lower back. You can see this stretch in the pictures below including emphasis placed on stretching your Iliopsoas by rotating to the opposite side.

Hip Flexor Stretch - Step 1

Hip Flexor Stretch - Step 2

This stretch is commonly performed incorrectly.

Key technique points to include are:

  • Take a big enough stride to comfortably do the stretch
  • Aim to be as tall as you can
  • Tighten up your gluts on the side being stretched
  • Do not arch your lower back
  • Tighten up stomach

When used in conjunction with the correct treatment and home exercises plans, this stretch can help increase hip mobility and offload your lower back. Two points that have strong links to reducing both back, hip and knee pain. Give this stretch a go and let us know how you get on!
