What Is Mindfulness?

What Is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the ability to focus attention in the present whilst acknowledging that thoughts and emotions that spring to mind are fleeting and changeable. It is a disposition but can be trained through meditation practice.

There are many mindfulness mediation techniques out there but they generally involve mediators adopting a sitting or lying position, focusing their attention on an attentional anchor, such as the breath. When attention moves away from the anchor, as it inevitably does, the task is to acknowledge this without judgement and to redirect attention back to the anchor.

Benefits Of Mindfulness

There are many psychological and clinical benefits to mindfulness practice, including:

  • Enhanced emotion regulation
  • Reduction in persistent pain and stress
  • Diminished anxiety
  • Improved attention
  • Enhanced state of self-esteem

What The Sports Stars Say

There are many sports stars who frequently use mindfulness, have a read of what they had to say:

Novak Djokovic

“If we all trained our minds as much as we are training our muscles and physical body, I think we Novac Djokovicwould achieve and maximise our potential. We don’t know how much we can really achieve until we have this kind of mind-set of wanting always to evolve and improve. It’s mindfulness, this kind of holistic approach in life that allows me to maximise my potential as a human being, from every aspect of my being, not just physical, but mental, emotional, spiritual. I try to be disciplined with all these different kind of exercises that I execute on a daily basis that make me feel good and present and calm and happy. At the end of the day that’s the purpose of life, to have inner calmness and be happy and do what you love to do and enjoy every moment of this life”.

Kobe Bryant

“I meditate every day. I do it in the morning for about 10-15 minutes. I think it’s important because it sets me up for the rest of the day. It’s like Kobe Bryanthaving an anchor. If I don’t do it, it feels like I am constantly chasing the day as opposed to being in control and dictating the day. I am set and ready for whatever may come my way. I have a calmness about whatever comes my way and pose. And that comes from starting the morning off with meditation”.
